Jan Yazzie: A Heartwarming Journey from St. Vincent Alumna to Dedicated Volunteer
Jan is a cherished alumna of St. Vincent and a steadfast volunteer. Jan’s life has been intricately woven into the fabric of The Core Collective at Saint Vincent (The CC). Jan’s journey begins with her formative years at the Home in the late 1950s. Then, it spans to her heartfelt return as a volunteer in the late 1980s. Jan is an integral part of The CC and leaves an indelible mark on its journey through her unwavering dedication,
Jan’s connection with St. Vincent began in her childhood. Jan lived and attended school at St. Vincent from kindergarten to second grade. Jan vividly recalls the joyous moments of the Sisters of Christian Charity hosting grand picnics. The Sacred Heart Chapel, brimming with people, and balconies filled with children created a sense of community that has left an everlasting impact on Jan. She attributes her character and values to the nurturing environment provided by the Home and the Sisters, stating, “I don’t think I’d be the person I am today without St. Vincent’s. Any good quality I have comes from them.”
Alumna to Volunteer: A Heartfelt Return
Jan returned to St. Vincent in the late 1980s. However, this time she had a mission to give back, “I feel that St. Vincent’s has given me so much, that it’s time for me to give back”. Volunteering alongside her husband, Jan felt profound gratitude for the love and support she received from the Home. Jan recalls the magical Christmas celebrations at the Home, where the auditorium overflowed with tables laden with gifts for the children, as her inspiration. Because of this, Jan involves her friends and family in wrapping donated presents for the The CC’s youth during the holidays. As a yearly tradition, Jan’s friends and family come prepped with their own scissors, bows, and Christmas cookies to spend the morning wrapping gifts and spreading cheer.

A Lasting Legacy
Jan’s commitment to The CC goes far beyond the present. For instance, with a desire to pass on her spirit of giving, she actively involves her children and grandchildren. Aware of her lasting impact, Jan says, “I want my children and my grandchildren to be involved. They know when I’m gone, they have to carry that on.”
Inspired by Our History, Ready for the Future
Jan has had a front seat to the transformation of The CC over the past few decades. That being said, she expresses her excitement about The CC’s inclusive approach. Above all, Jan is passionate about helping children aging out of the foster care system. Jan states, “Seeing youth come through the doors that are always open and knowing you’re going to help them makes me feel so good.” The Transitional Living Program, designed to empower youth for independent living, resonates deeply with Jan, who appreciates the welcoming environment created for the young residents.
In conclusion, The Core Collective at Saint Vincent extends heartfelt gratitude to Jan Yazzie for her enduring dedication. Jan’s commitment and passion continue to shape the organization’s journey. Jan is an invaluable part of the extended CC family.
